If you use a laptop, the new interface can take up almost half of your work area. This Word Tips shows you a quick way to reclaim that space.

Hiding

There are three ways to hide the ribbon:

  • Press CTRL + F1, or
  • Double-click the active tab, or
  • Click Customize Quick Access Toolbar, then select Minimize the Ribbon

The Customize button on the Quick Access Toolbar

Now it is out of your way but is still easily accessible. This also works great if you are distracted by the brightly colored buttons.

Accessing Commands while Hidden

The Hidden Ribbon: click a tab to temporarily restore the ribbon in Word 2007.

To access the commands when in hidden mode, click a tab. The ribbon will stay open until you make a selection, then hide from view again.

Notice that the Office Button and Quick Access toolbar are still in view even though the ribbon is hidden. Add the commands you use most often to the Quick Access toolbar so you don't have to open the ribbon as often.

Restoring

To restore the ribbon and keep it open, do one of the following:

  • Press CTRL + F1, or
  • Double-click the active tab, or
  • Click Customize Quick Access Toolbar, then deselect Minimize the Ribbon

Tip: If you are easily distracted, try changing the color of the interface instead of hiding it. Silver may be less distracting than the default bright blue.
