Reset Spelling and Grammar Check

How do I do a complete RECHECK of the spelling and grammar in a Word 07 document?

ANSWER:

It is a good idea to do a complete spelling and grammar check on the last draft of a document, especially if more than one writer has worked on it.

To recheck the document, you need to reset the spelling and grammar checker so it checks text that was previously marked to be ignored. This is quite easy to do once you know where to find the controls!

Follow these steps to reset the spelling and grammar checker:

  1. Click the Office Button.
The Microsoft Word 2007 Office Button
  2. Click Word Options.
The Microsoft Word 2007 Office Button
  3. On the left navigation menu, select Proofing.
  4. Click Recheck Document, then click Yes.
  5. Click OK.

This resets the checker. Now press F7 to run a new spelling and grammar check.

Caution: If you added incorrectly spelled words to the Microsoft Word dictionary, resetting the spell checker does NOT remove the incorrect spellings.

fix spell check
by: Penny

I appreciate your attempt to fix my problem. However, this didn't work. I still get a message that says, "The spelling and grammar check is complete. Text marked with "Do not check spelling or grammar" was skipped.

How would I have "marked text with 'do not check spelling or grammar'????

Troubleshooting the Spell Checker
by: Word-Tips

If you select "Ignore All" while you are running a spell check, it will ignore any additional instances of the misspelled word. However, if this was the case, it would have been reset using the previous instructions.

Sometimes if you copy and paste text from another document, the original author may have marked the text as "Do Not Check".

(The following troubleshooting information comes from the website of Suzanne Barnhill, Microsoft MVP. http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/MasterSpellCheck.htm)

First, go to Office Button > Word Options > Proofing. Make sure that "Hide Spelling Errors in this Document" is not selected.

If that does not fix the problem, select your entire document by pressing CTRL + A. On the Review tab in the Proofing group, select Set Language. Select the correct language, then clear the checkbox "Do not check Spelling or Grammar." Click OK.

Hopefully one of these solutions will correct the problem. If not, be sure to visit Suzanne's site. She has lots of great information for getting the most of out the Spelling and Grammar checker tools.
