Have you ever needed to count the words or characters in a document or part of a document? It is easy in Microsoft Word 2007 or 2010. Here is how.

Finding and Using the Word Count Tool

The Word 2007 word count tool can be found near the lower left-hand corner of the status bar. (The status bar is the bar at the bottom of the Microsoft Word window.)

To get more information such as the number of lines, paragraphs, characters, etc., click Word Count on the status bar. It is actually a button.

Clicking the button opens a dialog box that gives all of the stats. You can also choose to count or not count the words in headers, footers, and text boxes.

Finding the Word Count for a Section

The Word Count shows the total words in the entire document. To know how many words are in a section, highlight the section. The dialog box displays selected words/total words.

To get more information about the highlighted section, click the Word Count button while the text is still highlighted.
